ARTIST STATEMENT
In my work, I explore the complexities of cultural identity and the diasporic experience, creating pieces that bridge both personal narratives and collective memory.
Through mixed media paintings and installations, I highlight the nuances of border experiences and challenge viewers to rethink concepts of belonging and the fluidity of identity in a globalized world.
Using everyday objects particularly the "Ghana Must Go" plastic bag, which is deeply tied to travel and Nigeria’s socio-economic history, I deconstruct and incorporate its plaid pattern as texts within my work. This approach allows me to connect individual and shared experiences and to elicit reflections on how materials and the histories they hold shape our understanding of place and society.
My technique often involves a process of layering, repetition and erasure, creating a threshold between reality and memory, form and formlessness through a complex layering of imagery, paint drips, and textual elements- identification numbers, to evoke a sense of liminality and transience. Through this process, I contemplate on the fluidity and adaptability inherent in diasporic life, and how identities are woven and redefined through processes of migration, memory, and hybridity.
